Web Experiences on the Family TV

I am always looking to subscribe to new video podcasts on design and technology. Mainly because I think they are a great medium to keep up on latest happenings and news. What I enjoy most is the DIY factor that many podcasts contain. Virtually anyone can produce a podcast from their home or studio and start to build an audience. Additionally, I am finding the podcasts can sometimes be even better than the programming on national television.

This occurred to me when I began to look into ways to stream my podcast subscriptions from my computer and watch them on the TV in the comfort of my bed. I was looking for a low cost solution that sort of worked similar to the Apple TV. Finally, I found the software Medialink, which enables UPNP (Universal Plug and Play) on your home mac. Using Medialink in combination with my Sony Playstation 3, I was able to connect to my home mac and stream selected media. The whole process took me very little time and it had shifted the way I began to view web video content.

It was exactly what I had been looking for. A way to view online video particularly away from from my computer. It has turned into a ritual where I wait for my video podcast queue to build up and than watch my podcasts and absorb while relaxing.

Some of the various video podcasts that I have kept up with recently are:

CSS-Tricks ScreenCasts
Doctype
Drupal Videos
Monocle Design
PopTech
TEDTalks

As video content from the web is getting more popular, it’s beginning to catch on in the electronics industry. Being that I had to take several steps to start viewing podcasts on my TV (mostly to save money), companies like Samsung are beginning to include new technologies which make it easy to stream video from providers such as Netflix and YouTube. While it is still early on for web media being brought to the family television, this idea is evolving in many ways. I am hoping that integrating media from web on a television will become more streamline and be brought to the TV as a seamless experience.
